Cultivation: (2)
Pot:
The type of pot can have a dramatic effect on how quickly
composts dries out. Plastic pots have proved satisfactory for this orchids.
But, flowerpot is also examined at Japanese traditional Orchid-
Show. Therefore,Japanese gardener often uses expensive porcelain, or famous maker's china pot. (>>Japanese pots)
Watering:
During the growing season the orchids want moist (always moist,
not always wet) soil. How often to water varies greatly depending on temperature, wind, type of composts, size of pot, or the amount of sunlight a orchid is receiving. It is best to monitor the composts level to determine when to water.
The tap water of Japanese mainland is soft water.
Therefore, it is not harmful even if it gives tap water to plants.
If water is left on the leaves, it seems to precipitate the
development of fungal problems, which can be fatal. Pouring water around the edge of the pot , so that water does not lie on the leaves.
Japanese gardeners often cultivate terrestrials under a roof, for
protect from rain drop.
When the leaves are turning brown in spring at the beginning of
dormancy, give little water and keep semi-dry (not dry, not always moist) condition until autumn.
If it keep wet and under 25.C(77.F), new shoot grow up in summer
and orchid is dies off before autumn.
Humidity and Ventilation:
Okinawan orchis can tolerate a wide range of Humidity, but ideal
relative humidity for this orchids should range from 50 to 70 percent.
Air circulation is essential for proper plant growth and healthy
plants. Without proper air circulation bacterial and fungal diseases are more apt to be prevalent in plants. A small oscillating fan placed near your plants will provide adequate air circulation.
Repotting:
New tubers often drop into the bottom of flowerpot.
We must to repot it every year. The dormant tubers are repotted
about 1 to 2 cm deep during the late summer. In each 9-12cm pot,
2 to 5 tubers are covered with spagnum and bedded into the new
mix composts.
8 tubers at last year.propagate 17 tubers.
I use hard type clay pot.
covered with sphagnum moss, and fill mix composts.
The leaf of this plant spreads in the shape of a rosette. Therefore,
large growth area is needed compared with the size of a bulb. When you treat your orchids right, they'll flower almost every year and useally they'll make 2 new tubers. |
